I am extra and we all know I am extra so no one should've been shocked when I posted my prom dress as part of the genius hour project. I loved my dress it looked amazing and fit nicely, it had movement. My downside was the sequins. I had cuts and scratches all over my arms. The only way I could survive was by raising the roof all night.
From the looks of the form, most people's issue was the fact they didn't like the color green. Cheyenne Barnett gave me a 3 and said "I just don’t like the color and I feel the shoes don’t go with it." Keelyn Oakes disagrees and said "I love the color, super cute and love the sparkles." Overall this dress scored around a 7. In my personal books it also scored a 10/10 on looks and 4/10 on comfort-ability. Definitely cute, definitely not comfortable. These next few entries will be what I'm learning as well as some reviews of what I have learned. This project is really fun and giving me new things to explore. Learning about the faults of an industry I've been in love with since I was little and was a "fashionista" for Halloween since I was little is kinda of sad. Learning that the industry doesn't care about mental health which another one of my biggest passions is severely disheartening.

Week 7 was an absolute blast. I had Hunter Ryan Testa reached out and offer to help. I asked him if I could put him in jeans and he agreed. He is wearing a Gun and Roses shirt, jeans, and vans. This outfit scored an 8.4. Someone said, “I like how it is casual yet still very put together.” Faith Maxwell said “The shoes and the colors in them give the outfit a nice pop! They also match the shirt well. To make it a ten I’d add some accessories!” I did offer some gold jewelry which he did deny as he was not comfortable with wearing it. I wanted the shirt to be a little tight because for lack of better words he has masculine arms that deserve to be shown off but jeans as a break from the holey sweatpants he constantly wears. The vans gave it a pop of color. Hunter Testa is a literal rockstar and I wanted to keep that aspect of his personality, I believe I achieved that. From what I’ve been told he loved modeling and had fun doing different things and poses. He was fun to be around and made the shoot silly and relaxing, exactly how you want it to be in front of the camera and behind the camera. I used lens buddy to catch real smiles and funny moments. I enjoy being in front of and behind the camera.
I’m taking a little bit of a break from the constant stream of work I’ve been receiving as it is overwhelming. I’ve realized how much I really like fashion and writing and doing this work, makes me question my life career a little bit. This is something I really enjoy doing the writing, the research. I genuinely feel productive and happy doing this. It’s to be behind and in front of the camera to then write about my experiences. Yes, this doesn’t necessarily affect others people and bring great change but it does bring me joy. Maybe this is something I should consider. Who knows, clearly not me. I think I’ll do some research on careers in the modeling and writing industry. I've slowly started to run out time and people to style. Lots of people won't work with me and I am starting to run out of time. I've really leaned into the representation aspect of the fashion industry or lack of representation and that will most definitely show up a lot more. This week I collaborated with Miss Bonnie Taylor. I knew I wanted to style her and help her feel a little more confident in her own skin. I gave her a shirt I never wear from Target and jeans from LulaRoe. The boots and jacket she wore to have in her closet. With all this being said the average was a 7.6. Trent Wright gave it an 8 and said “It's a nice simplistic outfit with a casual feel. The big thing with me though is I feel like some type of sneaker would fit it better.” Rachel Quance made the comment “The shirt fit very nicely and matched the bottoms perfectly. Love the makeup!” and rated us a 10/10. I also need to find male models who are willing to be styled and photographed. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you would like to be part of the project!!
We only had 5 responses next week so my research for this week will be social media marketing. This week I did research on mental health within the modeling and fashion industry. Mental health is another aspect of my project considering I do run “Let’s talk about it” which is a podcast about mental health. (shameless self-promo). The modeling industry is very difficult and harsh considering there is a beauty standard and when you don’t fit in, you don’t/won’t get jobs. This is also where diversity plays in and makes everyone no matter what gender, race, size, and sexuality noticed and appreciated to the extent they should be. My plan these next weeks is to put everything on a google slide, design my magazine, and of course find more models. The runaway never stops. My goal is to have a total of 5 outfits from other people and 7 outfits from me. I will be working on the marketing aspect of my project. I am not entirely sure exactly how I want to do this but I will figure it out. Tune into the next blog post to see what I do next. This outfit was fully thrifted other than my Docs Martens. 8.1 was our overall score, this outfit was after my baptism and just a really cute fun dress to wear. This Wednesday I put together a Pinterest for inspiration in order to style other people and find different ways to model and pose myself and others. Skylar Link gave me an 8 and this was her review, “I like it! it’s just not my personal style but it fits your personality really well.” Bonnie Jo gave me a 7 and this was her review, “While I do still like this outfit, it’s not one that personally speaks to my interest. You pull the look off well, but to me personally it does not have the same vibrancy the other two looks I’ve reviewed did. I still think your sense of style is very intuitive though!”
I have made plans to style other people for this project too. I did a lot more research on mental health and the modeling industry. Currently I am struggling with finding male models. If you are okay with and wanting to be styled please email me, I would greatly appreciate it. Something I’ve learned a lot from this experience is how different sizes in fashion and proper representation are very important. I read an article from the Berkeley Political Review about representation in the modeling industry. I learned about how many agencies will have one person from a group and have a majority of white people. They touched on the psychology experiment where children had toys to play with and choose which looked prettier: the white or black one. Most children would say the white doll was “prettier.” These are based on Eurocentric ideas which will be more in depth on my final presentation and magazine. My final presentation will all be worth it. Go read and comment on other post to see what else I've done! Welcome to Week 3’s blog post! This might have been one of the best pictures I will take for this project. I have downloaded an app called lens buddy which will take a picture every 2 secs until I tell it to stop. This was an in-motion picture. Playing around with movement is something most models do and every photographer looks for.
Now let’s hope into the outfit itself. This outfit consists of a leotard from when my sibling did dance as a child, The pants are (you guessed it) old navy Rockstar high-waisted jeans, I added a plaid shirt I thrifted a few months ago and my Black Doc Martens. After Gavin’s comment about adding more jewelry, I added quite a few rings in order to spice up this outfit. I went for a simple but silver K necklace and white pearl earrings. My statement piece of this outfit was my flannel/plaid shirt and my silver dangle earring. During week 3’s research process I was wondering what on Earth I will have as my presentation with a google slide presentation and possibly a runway show. Then, it hit me, Vogue is a fashion magazine. Why don’t I just present my own magazine!! I have now added another key element to my project and presentation. With all this being said let’s get into Week 3’s reviews. This outfit scored as the highest so far with an 8.9. Here are some of the comments. Someone gave me a 7/10 saying “I like your outfit because I think that the flannel brings everything together” Cora Nicholson said “I liked it cause it was casual but you looked put together and like you had style” she gave me an 8/10. Go read and review more of my blogs to watch the fashion journey that is Vogue By Kat. Week one’s outfit scored an 8.2. Most comments were along the lines of this is really basic. I do agree the outfit was very basic but it was a simple start to see where we stand with how people will respond. I also learned the art of getting trolled and from learning this I was able to get my google forms to track emails, therefore, I could no longer get trolled.
Here are a few of my favorite comments about Week 1’s outfit! “Pretty good. Although I’m not an expert in this field, I didn’t find it repulsive at all.” They gave an 8/10. A good example of constructive criticism was from Gavin Taylor who gave the outfit a 6/10 “the shirt is nice but the jeans are pretty basic. colorful pants or more jewelry would def help it out” I am currently collecting more information on the sizing scales in the Fashion industry. The next part of my research will be different poses that work with different body types. That way I won’t have 12 pictures that look exactly the same and I can make fashion more inclusive. This week’s outfit was also very basic. It is a pink Sisterhood shirt from my local church, Rockstar Jeans from the old navy, and good old crusty Air Force 1's, the peak of basic fashion. I chose this insanely basic outfit as I don’t wear a lot of colors and thought the pink, blue, and white would compliment each other. This outfit did pretty well. I got an 8.5, the best comment was from Bonnie Taylor who said” You’ve got great style with this. I also was happy to help with accessories! I truly think you’re one of the most knowledgeable people when it comes to fashion and this outfit just compliments itself in every way.” Based on this review we can tell she gave me a 10/10. Apologies for the late blog posts, one thing I will be learning a lot from this project is time management. Go read the next blog to see what else is in store for Vogue by Kat! Week 6’s score was 8.8. This outfit was a shirt I got from one of my friends, a leotard from an old dance recital, BBG jeans from Urban Outfitters, and Black doc martens. I loved this outfit and the pictures that came from that day. The outfit was a little different than what I normally wear but had the neutrals with the black boots as a bolder piece and it was an outfit I felt really confident and comfortable in. Here is the best response “it suits your skin tone and your personality.” I’m currently trying to put all my research into a google slide show as well as a magazine for an official (not really) Vogue magazine. I honestly might have to make sure that Vogue isn’t copyrighted so I can make myself a copy to show to people a little bit of journalism work. This project has me doing creative writing, research, digital marketing, and fashion. It’s basically like I’m running a small marketing and magazine company by myself and I love every minute of it. Next week I will be styling a male I just have to find one that’s willing. I do have on Mr. Barker’s board “Kat needs men… to model” I have started offering to go to places to get pictures and then paying for food. Your comfortability to me whenever modeling is of utmost importance to me. I have offered food and comfort to all of the people who want to model. I have gotten one promising male. I had someone ask the question “Why do you need men?” and the answer is simple: It's for diversity. The industry doesn’t have many men and we need diversity. It would be almost wrong if I talked about the lack of diversity and then didn’t do anything about it. I recently worked with Lauren Forbes. She made a pair of overalls with an embroidered daisy on the back. It helped me learn how to pose while showing off the standpoint of a backed focus. A backed focus is a term I have made up while writing this blog post and it’s having a key element and focus on an article of clothing on the back which is something not even seen. For example, a pair of pants with happiness written on the pockets or a hoodie with an inspirational phrase. Modeling from a backed focus was interesting and something I might try implementing in the future of Vogue by Kat. It was a really good experience. Modeling is fun and if you want to try it out then let me know. See you guys next week
